Op zaterdag 8 februari presenteren Studio de Bakkerij en Pete Wu een programma rondom de modelminderheidsmythe.
Sinds het begin van de vorige eeuw wordt op en rondom de Kruiskade het Chinees Nieuwjaar gevierd. Dat is niet gek: de eerste golf Chinese migranten kwam in 1911 op Katendrecht terecht om in de scheepvaart te werken. Daar ontstond dan ook de eerste Chinatown van Europa, met restaurants en gokhuizen.
Al vanaf het begin kleeft altijd het dominante maar verkeerde beeld aan Chinese en andere Oost-Aziatische Nederlanders als een gemeenschap van hardwerkende, gehoorzame migranten. Deze avond is een mooie kans om de huidige generaties Oost-Aziatische migranten te laten zien als meer dan dat: geen modelminderheden, maar net zo divers als elke andere sociale groep.
Journalist en auteur van De Bananengeneratie Pete Wu draagt voor uit het boek Modelverhalen, reflecties op Aziatische Roots. Schrijver, media- en cultuurwetenschapper en docent Reza Kartosen-Wong geeft een introductie op de modelminderheidsmythe. Social Media Specialist Hohe Zheng geeft een Q&A over YiQi, een platform dat zich richt op het vastleggen en authentiek vertegenwoordigen van verhalen uit de Chinese diaspora.
We sluiten de avond af met een gesprek onder leiding van de programmamaker van Pan Asian Collective (PAC) Jessy Wong.

Over Pete Wu
Journalist en schrijver Pete Wu debuteerde in 2019 met het boek De bananengeneratie: over het dubbelleven van Chinese Nederlanders van nu. Dat werd genomineerd voor de Brusseprijs voor beste journalistieke boek en naar het theater gebracht in 2022 tot 2024. In 2020 verscheen zijn documentaireserie Pete en de Bananen op tv voor VPRO en was hij columnist bij de Volkskrant. In 2023 toerde hij met een live performance door Nederland en België als ambassadeur van de Week van het Nederlands. Pete werkt momenteel aan een roman.
Over Reza Kartosen-Wong
Reza Kartosen-Wong is vader van Sam-Ming en Indra, schrijver, spreker en docent Mediastudies aan de UvA. Hij promoveerde op onderzoek naar mediaconsumptie en identiteitsvorming onder Aziatische Nederlanders. Reza schrijft columns en essays voor kranten als Trouw. Met zijn vrouw Chee-Han Kartosen-Wong schreef hij de prentenboeken Waar is mijn noedelsoep?!?, Gebakken rijst met van alles en nog wat!!! en Heb.schaafijs.nodig!!! en werkt hij aan een kinderboek over de VOC en slavernij.
Over Hohe Zheng
Hohe Zheng is de oprichtster van YIQI, een platform dat zich richt op het vastleggen en authentiek vertegenwoordigen van verhalen uit de Chinese diaspora. Gedreven door haar eigen zoektocht naar identiteit binnen een biculturele context, streeft Hohe ernaar de Chinese diaspora te verbinden met elkaar en met hun roots.
Over Jessy Wong
Jessy Wong (1996, zij/haar) is museoloog, freelance projectleider en programmamaker. Met haar werk zet ze zich veelvuldig in voor meer authentieke Aziatische representatie in Nederland. Wong is tevens werkzaam als illustrator, fotograaf en (creatief) strateeg.

About Pete Wu
Journalist and writer Pete Wu made his debut in 2019 with the book De bananengeneratie: over het dubbelleven van Chinese Nederlanders van nu. It was nominated for the Brusse Prize for Best Journalistic Book and was adapted for the theater from 2022 to 2024. In 2020, his documentary series Pete en de Bananen aired on TV for VPRO, and he was a columnist for de Volkskrant. In 2023, he toured the Netherlands and Belgium with a live performance as an ambassador for the Week of the Dutch Language. Pete is currently working on a novel.
About Reza-Kartosen-Wong
Reza Kartosen-Wong is the father of Sam-Ming and Indra, a writer, speaker, and lecturer in Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). He earned his PhD researching media consumption and identity formation among Asian Dutch people. Reza writes columns and essays for newspapers such as Trouw. Together with his wife, Chee-Han Kartosen-Wong, he authored the picture books Waar is mijn noedelsoep?!?, Gebakken rijst met van alles en nog wat!!! and Heb.schaafijs.nodig!!! and he is working on a children’s book about the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and slavery.
About Hohe and YIQI
Hohe Zheng is the founder of YIQI, a platform focused on capturing and authentically representing stories from the Chinese diaspora. Driven by her own search for identity within a bicultural context, Hohe aims to connect the Chinese diaspora with each other and with their roots.
About Jessy Wong
Jessy Wong (1996, she/her) is a museologist, freelance project manager, and cultural programmer. Promoting authentic Asian representation within the Dutch cultural landscape is one of the main focal points in her work. She also works as an illustrator, photographer, and (creative) strategist.
